The Talk That Hasn't Happened Yet
Panoramic Parents

Your kid probably uses AI every week. Homework, jokes, music ideas, questions they would never ask out loud. But here is the question worth asking tonight: has anyone ever talked with them about how to use it safely?
For nearly half of kids, the answer is no.
The gap is not about blame
Common Sense Media asked 1,204 U.S. kids ages 9 to 17 about AI in its Census: AI Use by Tweens and Teens, 2026, released June 8, 2026. Only 56% said a parent or guardian had talked with them about how to use AI safely. That leaves 44% who said that talk had never happened.
Nearly half of kids have never had the AI safety talk.
The gap stays wide even where you would least expect it. Among kids who use AI every day, more than a third, 34%, said they had never had the safety talk. Using AI a lot is not the same as being guided through it.
One question tonight
You do not need a lecture, a slide deck, or the perfect script. You need one honest question, and then quiet while your kid answers.
Try this, word for word: "Has anyone ever talked with you about how to use AI safely, and what would you want that talk to cover?"
Then listen. If they shrug, that is an answer too. It tells you the talk has not landed yet, or has not happened at all. If they have ideas, let their answer shape what you cover next, instead of starting with your list of worries.
If they say "we already talked about it"
Great. Ask what they remember from it, and what still feels unclear. A short chat counts in these surveys, so "we talked about it once" and "we really covered it" can look identical on paper.
Parents tell a similar story from the other side. In a Pew Research Center survey published February 24, 2026, just over half of parents said they ever talk to their teen about chatbots, and roughly four in ten said they had not had these discussions. Two different surveys, two different samples, pointing the same way.
This is not proof that the missing talk caused harm. It is proof of a gap, and gaps are fixable. One question tonight closes it a little.
