The Homework Looks Finished. The Learning Isn't.

Your kid typed the essay prompt into a chatbot. A perfect paragraph came back in ten seconds. The homework is done, the grade is safe, and something important never happened.
The largest study of teenagers on the planet just measured what that shortcut costs. The OECD's PISA 2025 report, released September 8, 2026, tested more than 760,000 fifteen-year-olds across 91 countries. It also asked them how they use AI for schoolwork.
28 points
That is the gap in science scores between students who said they never or almost never use AI chatbots to draft writing assignments (509) and students who use them every day or nearly every day (481). The gap holds even after adjusting for family income. On the PISA scale, that is roughly a year and a half of schooling.
Why the struggle is the point
Here is the line to pin to your fridge. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD's director for education and skills, put it like this: we do not get fit by watching sports, and we do not learn by watching an AI do the thinking. "Where technology short-circuits the productive struggle of learning, it will undercut students' development."
The struggle is not a bug in homework. It is the mechanism. The rough draft, the deleted paragraph, the second attempt: that is where the learning happens.
One honest note: this is correlation, not proof of cause. The OECD does not claim chatbots caused the lower scores. But a 28-point association across three-quarters of a million students is not something a parent can shrug off.
What to do tonight
Make this the house rule, borrowed from the OECD itself: AI is a scaffold, never the crutch.
Tonight, try the "one paragraph first" rule. Before AI touches any assignment, your kid does five minutes solo: one rough paragraph, one attempt at the problem. Then the chatbot can help review it, not write it. Hints and feedback keep the struggle alive. Answers end it.
Then run the one check that matters. Ask: "Can you explain this back to me in your own words?" If they cannot, the homework is not done yet. The grade was never the point. The understanding was.
